Bahraini forces cracked down on an open-ended sit-in initiated by the families of political prisoners in front of the Jaw Central Prison on Thursday, May 2, 2024, demanding the immediate release of all political prisoners.

The wife of political prisoner Yousef Hassan Mohammad, held in the Jaw Central Prison, called on "officials and those in charge" to immediately release her husband and address his deteriorating health condition "so that he does not leave prison dead, carried on shoulders."

Baqer Darwish, the head of the Bahrain Forum for Human Rights (BFHR), stressed "the need to start taking confidence-building measures, including the whitening of prisons (i.e. the release of political prisoners) to correct the course" in Bahrain.

Bahraini Member of Parliament Mohammad Al-Husseini demanded "the strong return of political life to Bahrain, the return of political societies, whitening of prisons (i.e. the release of political prisoners), and the release of Sheikh Ali Salman," the Secretary-General of the Al-Wefaq Society from prison.

Bahraini Member of Parliament Mamdouh Al-Saleh urged the King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to release opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman, the Secretary-General of Al-Wefaq Society, who is currently imprisoned.

Salam for Democracy and Human Rights said that "Despite Bahrain's ratification in 2006 of civil and political rights, including the right to protest and peaceful assembly, local legislation restricts this right and contradicts international law."

Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim hopes that the release of a number of political prisoners will be a promising step toward a serious, accelerated, and comprehensive corrective path to resolve the existing problems in the political relationship between the authorities and the Bahraini people.

The coordinating committee for the "Justice Shall be Claimed" activities in Jaw Central Prison stated that the open sit-in demanding the unconditional release of all political prisoners continues to stand firm and determined despite the inhumane restrictions.
